I voted. For the fourth time, I got to proudly check the metaphorical box next to Barack Obama's name. I still remember checking into the Democratic candidates in the 2004 Senatorial primary, where I first heard of Obama. I was originally leaning toward Dan Hynes because I knew a little of him. I also really didn't like Blair Hull. So I started reading about the candidates at the Tribune and Sun-Times websites, and I started reading about this Barack Obama guy. And I just kept reading about him, and then the papers endorsed him and I read the reasons behind those endorsements, and I was hooked. I'm glad he represents my state in the Senate, and I'm glad I got the opportunity to vote for him today.

I think that this was the first time I mentioned him in my journal. It was March 04, just before the Illinois primary.

And for the sake of reminiscence:

Election day, 2004:
I put on my Obama for Senate button this morning, and Elsie Moo-Cow bit me. Clearly she's an ultra-Conservative. That would also explain the "Kitty Kats for Keyes" bumper sticker I found.

The day after election day, 2004:
In my mind, I'm turning Barack Obama into the last hope for progressive government in the US. He's become Baruke Obamawalker, the Rebellion's last hope against the Empire. I hope it doesn't turn out that Bush is his father.

Today's meme
  1. Stop talking about politics for a moment or two.
  2. Post a reasonably-sized picture in your LJ, NOT under a cut tag, of something pleasant, such as an adorable kitten, or a fluffy white cloud, or a bottle of booze. Something that has NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS.
  3. 3. Include these instructions.

Despite today's drizzly rain, horse trainer Jim Paden of Durham turned up at the corner of U.S. 15-501 and Garrett Road in Durham with his donkey, Pipe Cleaner, to encourage supporters of presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Drivers honked their horns, and Obama supporters stopped for photos with Paden, Pipe Cleaner and fellow Obama supporter Denny Powell. The three arrived at the corner about 5:30 a.m. to greet commuters. Pipe Cleaner wore a blue, blanket-like VOTE sign on his back, and Powell waved an Obama sign.

"You see a donkey on the side of the road, you can't help but smile," Powell said.

I'm a little tipsy... That hasn't happened in a while. I guess 2/3 of a bottle of champagne will do that to you.
