Still traveling
Nov. 27th, 2007 10:09 pmI fly a lot for work, as you probably know. There are people that travel more than me, but I still do my share. One thing that makes it tolerable is earning elite status on an airline. It lets you board earlier, gives you standby priority, occasional upgrades, a few extra frequent flier miles, etc.
I've been Platinum on American Airlines (their middle of three levels of elite status) for two years now, and since the first half of my year was slow, I was worried about not making my Platinum. You need 50k miles to make it, or 60 segments. A segment is an individual one-way flight, so a normal direct round-trip is two segments (one each way) and if you have a connection each way then it's four segments for the round trip.
As I said, i started out slow this year, and didn't hit 30 segments until mid-July. So I started booking some of my trips with a connection so I could get the extra segments I needed to get back to platinum.
And then September came. Had I know what Sept-Nov would bring, I wouldn't have worried so much.
( Travel since Labor Day )
So that was (or rather "will be", since it includes my flight to MSP this week) 34 segments -- half of what I need all year -- in three months. If you're adding up days on the road, I counted 42 days where I either had a flight or slept in a hotel.
My point? I needn't worry any more about Platinum status, of course, since I now have 70 segments after this week. Maybe next year I'll go for Executive Platinum, which will take 100 segments. That means I'll have to start doubling up early. We'll see how that goes.
I also don't get to see my Q enough. I love her.
