The company I work for has a recall of sorts going on. One of our chip manufacturers gave us some chips with a design flaw, and my company built 70,000 units with these bad chips. They're spread out all over the globe. Luckily, we keep track of the serial numbers when we sell them, so we can contact the machine manufacturers and find out where the drives are. This has been going on for about 18 months now.

All of the sites with a ton of drives have been taken care of, so now we're down to the onsey-twosey kinds of places. I'm volunteering for a few sites because (a) I get to pick and choose, and (b) I need more flights since I'm behind on keeping my Platinum status this year. So I volunteered for some in Canada. I'm in Ontario the week after next, and I'm trying to get the one site in Nova Scotia, too, because I've never been to Nova Scotia and I'd like to check another province off of my list*.

But mostly, I need the segments. You don't understand the powerful pull of Platinum status until you have it. I'm only at 30 segments for the year and I need 60 by the end of the year. Given that there's so little travel in December, this means I'm way behind. I'm going to have to start taking one-stop flights (i.e., I may go to Toronto via BOS or LGA) instead of direct flights. If I do that for a couple months, I should be back on track. Hopefully I won't get to the point where I take a weekend in December flying the cheapest routes I can find just to get the segments (It'd be worth it for me to spend a few hundred dollars getting the segments/miles I need).

In good news, I now have 300k miles on American AND Q now has a passport, so maybe next year we can take the trip to the UK that I've been waiting for.

*So far, I've been to British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Quebec, which isn't bad for an American. I bet I can convince Q to go camping in Manitoba next year so I can at least get that one gone.
