So, this weekend The Q will be in OK and AR, and I will be building my own PC. I've never tried this before, so UGHbutYAY. Parts are rolling in and tomorrow I should have them all. It'll be pretty nice when it's done, I think. It'll also be huge, specifically because the case I bought is huge. The good news is that it'll have plenty of room for expansion since it's got ELEVEN external bays and three more slots for internal HDDs. When it's all said and done, it should be a pretty good upper-mid-level computer. Here are some specs:

Processor: Intel Core-Duo 6400 "Conroe"
Memory: 2GB
Storage: 825GB (a new 750GB hard drive plus the 125GB drive out of my current PC)
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7900. Not top of the line, but good enough.
External media: Two DVD-RW plus a multi-flash-card reader.

So it should be pretty good, and it's got room to grow. I can always add more Memory or storage, and I can upgrade to even the next generation processor if I feel like it. It should also have pretty good cooling, which is important. The tricky part now, of course, is assembly. I took a couple of days off to work on it. I suspect that the game plan is:

  • Re-assemble my computer desk (I did a shoddy job of it when I moved)
  • Install Power Supply
  • Install Motherboard
  • Install Processor and fan
  • Install Graphics card
  • Boot up and flash the latest BIOS to the motherboard off of a flash drive
  • Install Memory
  • Install HDDs and DVD drives
  • Install wireless card (out of my current PC)
  • Install Vista
  • Transfer all the shit off of my old computer to my new one.
  • Cross my fingers a lot.

Also, it'll have a lot of pretty blue LEDs, which I believe are generally considered passé among the computer-building elite, but that's not me and I still like shiny things. There will be a lot of manuals to read and things to figure out, but hopefully I can do it. I should make sure I have Chris' (my good friend who helped me spec out all of this crap) cell phone number so I can call him when I'm on the verge of tears.

We'll see how this goes.
