Jul. 5th, 2005 06:17 pmI just saw a documentary called Hamburger America that I recorded off of The Sundance Channel, and now my goal is to eat at all of those places.
In order that I want 'em:
What's your favorite non-chain (or small chain, if you want) hamburger?
In order that I want 'em:
- Dyer's, Memphis TN: A deep-fried burger, cooked in 90+ year-old grease. Well, they strain it every night, so it's clean grease, but as the guy says "there's at least a few molecules from 1912 in there". It looks like a greasy tasty burger. Plus, you know, Memphis.
- Louis' Lunch, New Haven CT: Purports to be the home of the hamburger. They vertically grill the burgers in gas broilers that were built in 1898. I like that there is ZERO tolerance for change to the burgers and they're cooked just like in 1900. The burger is served on toast because that's the way it was done.
- Solly's Grill, Glendale WI: A butter burger. Now, I've had butter burgers (there's a chain in the midwest called Culver's that makes a descent one) but these are BUTTER burgers. They put a LOT of butter on 'em, so much that the burger is practically swimming in the butter by the time it gets to the table (look at the picture on the site linked above). YUM (and just down the street from the Wisconsin Heart Hospital, luckily).
- The Meers Store, Meers OK: A 1/2 pound burger from longhorn beef that the store farms itself. The owner also is just really cool to listen to. He talks about how his beef has healthy yellow fat because it's grass fed instead of the evil white fat from corn-fed beef. It'll probably be the hardest to actually get to, because when will I get to Meers OK?
- Ted's, Meriden CT: A steamed burger. What really looks tasty is the melty cheese that's also steamed (hence the melty).
- The Wheel Drive In, Sedalia MO: Home of the Guber Burger, a burger with peanut butter on it. Again, the owner seems like a very laid-back nice guy, and the burgers look pretty good, too!
- Billy Goat Tavern, Chicago IL: The burger looks decent, I suppose, but it's more the atmosphere (and the fact that some believe they're responsible for the curse on the Cubs, and the SNL sketches) and the "Cheeseborger! Cheeseborger! Cheeseborger!" that appeals to people. I could eat there tonight, of course, if I really wanted to. Hard to believe I've never been there.
- Bobcat Bite, Santa Fe NM:: A just-over-1/2-pound burger with green chiles and cheese... Looks okay, but I'm not too big a green chile fan. Maybe I'll be surprised.
