Jan. 16th, 2005 11:07 pmI've noticed that my local 7-11 has had lots of "special" peanut butter cup varieties, so I've decided to try them all and tell you. They're all by Reese's.
Original Peanut butter cups are awarded a baseline score of five. Score: Five
Those little bite-size peanut butter cups you see at easter would be a three. Score: Three
Inside-Out Peanut Butter Cups: They have a peanut-butter-ish "chocolate" on the outside and a chocolate cream on the inside. The peanut butter part is way too sweet and just has an off taste to it. The chocolate has a weird texture and again is too sweet. Score: One
White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups: I'm not a fan of white chocolate, but it actually meshed pretty well with the chocolate. I liked 'em more that I thought I would. Score: Three
Extra Smooth-and-Creamy Peanut Butter Cups: The texture of the peanut butter was off, like when you get a really old nasty one with chalky peanut butter (though I think these were "fresh"). The taste of the peanut butter wasn't much different. Score: Two
King-Size Peanut Butter Cups: I'm not talking the four-to-a-pack variety. This is a new variety that is a really thick cup, maybe twice as thick as normal. Normal peanut butter (though more of it), normal chocolate. Now, one of the things I've always thought about the Original Cups is that they had the right balance of chocolate and peanut butter (which is one thing I don't much like about homemade cups; they don't have the right balance). I actually enjoyed these extra-large cups even more than the original. Score: Six
One Thing I'd like to try would be a crispy cup with rice crisps between the chocolate and peanut butter. And they came up witha cookie-and-peanut butter cup a couple of years ago, but it was bad because the amount of peanut butter was halved to make room for the cookie and the cookie got soggy. If they could bury a Twix-like cookie in the bottom of one of the giant cups, it might be the best ever.
Of course, even then it wouldn't be as good as my most brilliant idea ever, the Snix™ bar. It's a Twix and a Snickers in one.
