Shawn posted some pretty cool lyrics from a song he likes, so I'm doing the same: a song lyric I like, from Papa Was a Rodeo by Magnetic Fields (covered by Kelly Hogan)
More songs should use the word 'pucker', I think. Easy movie quote: "Oh gee, thanks Dave, bang-up job so far. Extortion, coercion; you'll pardon me if I ask you to kiss my pucker." Anyone?
I made an on-the-go playlist for my iPod. It would be most readable if I listed the songs in a list form, but I feel like shaking things up, so I'll just list them sequentially: It starts with Yo La Tengo's Yellow Sarong, followed by Holly Golightly's Sally Go Round the Roses. Then it shifts gears to the slow and soulful Flawed but Beautiful by a local Chicago band called Mr. Rudy Day. As an aside, let me point out that my new LJ name is taken from the title of this song, and isn't it oh-so-true? From there we move into The Magnetic Fields' Kiss Me Like You Mean It. Have any of you listened to The Magnetic Fields? I'm curious to know your opinion of them. After that, we hear the soothing sounds of Shelley Duvall singing the Harry Nillson penned He's Large from the Popeye soundtrack. I hope to have a woman sing that about me someday. I'm not a mandolin, I'm an accordion. Then we listen to The Little Cowboy, a song by Erin McKeown.
typo_mna recommended this singer to me, saying that she's reminiscent of Ms. Edie Brickell. I don't think she sounds at ALL like Ms. Brickell, but I like her a lot anyway. Thanks Adam! Jonathan Richman is next on the list, with his Spanish-influenced duet The Neighbors. From there we move to a cover of a Magnetic Fields' song, the aforementioned Kelly Hogan cover of Papa Was A Rodeo. Since we're doing covers, a Loretta Lynn cover follows: Rated X as performed by Ms. Neko Case and The Sadies. Hey, let's turn 180°, shall we? How 'bout The Pharcyde's Passing Me By, a song that makes me a little sad because it was introduced to me by a friend that I don't speak with much anymore. :( But that's okay, because we move to the oddest song of the bunch (odd in its non-oddness, mostly), John Lennon's Imagine. But now let us pick up the tempo with The Flying Neutrino's Baby's Making Duck, another song that you've never heard and likely never will. Cut Your Hair (by Pavement) follows that, which is in turned followed by LJ (actually, it's PJ, but that's an interesting typo) Harvey's Down By The Water. Chicago-based neo-country band The Siderunners follow with Due South, and another Chicago band, Blissfield, pulls up the rear with Car Crash. This is a band that I just heard for the first time on Saturday, but I liked them a lot and look forward to seeing them again.
And that's how things would look if Jesus hadn't provided us with the ability to make lists. It's what separates us from the monkeys.
And if you've heard even, like, four of those songs, I'd be surprised.
I just talked to a native Asian man (last name of Ngo; that'd be SE Asian, probably, right?) who's now in Alabama and has obviously lived there for some time. It's weird to hear an Asian and Southern US accent simultaneously.
There's more, but I really don't have the time and you really don't have the patience.
I like your twisted point of view, Mike.
I like your questioning eyebrow.
You've made it pretty clear what you like,
But it's only fair to tell you now
That I leave early in the morning
And I won't be back 'til next year
I see that kiss-me pucker forming,
But maybe you should plug it with a beer.
