Movie Review: X2
May. 7th, 2003 11:05 amX2: X-Men United - Clearly my opinion on this film doesn't matter much. It's an over-the-top effects-driven weak-plotted cliched blockbuser. For me, the superhero genre has outlived its usefulness. It's like fantasy films, where too many plot holes are filled with "magic" or, in this case, super-powers. I know it's fiction, but that doesn't make it any less silly. Anyway, with the brained turned completely off, this isn't a horrible film. The action was too fast-paced, as is standard in today's action movies (why is it supposed to be impressive that everything move too fast to see?), but the story wasn't as bad as the first one. Needless to say, there were a number of questionable motivations and too many characters to allow any of them to be interesting. And a silly little over-acted love story. And of course PLENTY of set-up for another sequel. What it boils down to is this: If you like super-hero movies, then this is a pretty decent one. Turn-off your brain and enjoy. As for me, well, I like a different type of film. Joey gives X2 two-and-a-half stars and recommends it only to people who love the sci-fi superhero genre.
