Love Liza - Phillip Seymore Hoffman, Kathy Bates, and Jack Kehler (a supporting character whose name I had to look up) did great jobs acting in this film. The premise of the story is good, but the actual story left me cold. It was spotty, some scenes really were well done, but then there would be sudden changes in mood and such that made the whole thing kinda klunky. Joey gives Love Liza two-and-a-half stars out of four and does not particularly recommend it.

Russian Ark - The whole film has TONS of people playing period people in Russian history, and the whole film takes place in a palace-turned-art museum (The Hermitage) in St. Petersburg, Russia. The schtick is that the whole film was filmed in a single shot. A big deal is made about this, though Timecode did the same thing but with FOUR single shots. I was not overly impressed with most aspects of this film. The costumes were gorgeous, and the scale of the whole thing was impressive, but the story was non-exsistant and the whole thing seemed like an excuse to do the schtick. Joey gives Russian Ark two-and-a-half stars out of four and only recommends it to people who are interested in the single-shot technique or who REALLY like spectacle. Timecode is a superior picture, IMHO.
