Apr. 4th, 2006 03:20 pmTom Delay quit. That's nice.
I slept in today. That was nice.
Last night I saw a guy in a bar pass out, fall off his stool, and crack his face open on the back of Susan's chair. That wasn't so nice.
After Drunky Von PassOut cracked himself open, we went to Myopic and got a buttload of used books. Awesome. Has anyone ever figured out why bookstores make some people have to poop? It does me. The books were nice, the need to poop was less so.
On Friday, The Q and I played a couple of matches of Crokinole. I won the first match. In the second, she had the most amazing shot: I had three disks in the 15 circle, which had me well on my way to winning the round. Her shot knocked all three of my discs into the ditch AND pocketed her piece into the 20-hole, for a 65 point swing. She won that round and won the match. She credits the shot with the incredible mojo of MamaCat, who was sitting on her lap when she made the shot.
On Sunday, The Q and I played games with Grumbly and Pants. This, of course, means that it's time for...
GAMING SESSION REPORT
02 APR 06 w/Pants, Grumbly, and The Girl
Colossal Arena - Nancy describes this game as "the NCAA tournament of monsters", and that's an accurate decision. The idea is that there are all of these fantasy beings in a big fight, and you bet on them. Needless to say, you also influence how the combatants do. If the ones you bet on survive until the final three, you collect on your bets. In this game, things went relatively smoothly int he first couple rounds. In the third round (I think), I knocked out Paul's Titan that he had a lot of bets on. He paid me back the next round by knocking out my troll, which I had pretty much everything riding on. In the end, Nancy had the most balanced approach and won the game with 14 points, followed by Paul's 9, Susan's 7, and my 5. As for the game, I found it really quite fun, and have rated it an 8 (of 10) on boardgamegeek.com.
Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper - It's probably easy enough to figure out on this one that the mechanic for the game is just like rummy: Set collection. You collect melds of evidence and add suspects for even more points. Alibi's are a good twist; they allow a player to negate the nice sets of other players. In our game, Paul led from start to finish and won the game easily. He scored 103 points to Nancy's 61, my 51, and Susan's 44. I have rated the game a 7/10 so far.
Tigris & Euphrates - This is my favorite game. Unfortunately, the rest of the group doesn't particularly care for it. The game involves emerging kingdoms in the Tigris and Euphrates river valleys. Players compete for control of these kingdoms, including the ability to overtake other peoples' kingdoms either by just moving in or by attacking other kingdoms. I find it fascinatingly compelling with the different options on each turn. Most likely due to the fact that I like the game more, I have won every time we've played. This time was no exception, as I won quite easily (Paul kept up pretty well, actually). After we all built-up our kingdoms a bit, I was the first to go on the offensive by attacking Susan's kingdom. It didn't work like I wanted it to for two reasons: First, I broke up the kingdom and didn't get access to the monument that I wanted, and secondly, it pissed Susan off mightily. She bit me. That is my first gaming related bite. Eventually (as in MUCH later that night), she forgave me. I wasn't trying to pick on her, she just had the kingdom that I could get into and the monument to get me lots of points. On the other side of the board, Nancy and Paul flirted with each others kingdoms, but didn't get around to actually attacking each other until the end of the game. I think that the others weren't aggressive enough, but that's not really their style (well, Paul can be aggressive when he needs to be, but Nancy and Susan don't like that aspect in games so much). During the game, you collect victory points (VPs) in four colors, and whatever you have the least of is your final score. I finished 7/8/8/8, Paul game in 5/5/5/10, Nancy came in 5/5/5/7, and Susan (it was her first (and maybe last) game) finished with 0/3/6/6. The game remains a 10/10 for me.
It brings up an interesting point, though, which is that I might need to find another gaming group to supplement this group. I'll never find a group that I have as much FUN with as these folks, but a few games I really like (T&E, Fearsome Floors, others) don't resonate well with them. It'd be a good idea to have some others to play those games with so I don't bog down our group with games that appeal only to me. I would want a group that meets on weekdays, since I like my weekend time with Susan. I know there's a group in Elgin who meets on Thursdays, so maybe I'll contact them.
La Strada - This game is a simple game of connecting cities with roads. It also, as it turns out, was probably the most contentious game we played. half-way through the game, there are limited ways to get from one city to the next, so every time you connect cities for yourself, you're blocking someone else out. The bigger the city, the more it's worth, but cities are also more valuable with less people having roads that connect to it. I was playing a pretty good game at the beginning, but I couldn't keep a couple of my cities as monopolies, so I lost a lot of points I wanted. In the end, Paul won a close game with his 26 beating Nancy's 23, my 21, and Q's 18. The game is pretty simple, and while it's fun and quick, I don't think it's something we'll play too terribly often. I'll rate it a 6.5/10.
Games are ALWAYS nice, even when we're mean.
