Moxi

So, I love my DVR. Except that I totally hate it. Comcast uses a Motorola box that has something like 32GB of storage. That's not enough, not when you record a lot of HD, at least. And even though the box supports adding on additional SATA drives, Comcast has that feature disabled. So you're stuck with too little recording space and not a damn thing you can do about it. And the interface is shit.

So now I want an external HD DVR box. Specifically, a Moxi. It comes with a built-in 500GB drive and the capability to add on up to 2TB more. Um, yes, please. And unlike the Tivo boxes, there is no monthly fee with the Moxi. Of course, it's not cheap. $800, to be specific, but they just introduced a new plan for 20 months at $40/month. And after it's paid off, nothing. Since the shitty Comcast DVR is $16/month, that means that the new box would take around four years to pay off on price, but let's face it: I'm still going to want a DVR in four years, too. And the added features of Moxi are totally worth it anyway.

anyway, I have to think about it. If I do it, it'd come out of my own account (whereas the cable comes out of Q and I's joint account). I'm sure that Q would welcome anything that knocked the cable bill down a little bit. That shit ain't cheap.

The only downside of the Moxi that I can see (other than the cost) is that it doesn't support OnDemand, though they say that it's being worked on. I would still be able to rent movies over the xbox, so that's not the end of the world, either.

And that's what I'm thinking about today.
