My favorite and least favorite nuts: (in the culinary sense, not the botanical sense):
The Top Six:
1. The Walnut - I LOVE a good walnut. I like their texture, their taste... You know, we have apples, celery, walnuts and mayo right now. It sounds like a waldorf salad to me!
2. The Pine Nut - I like 'em raw, toasted... I only ever eat 'em by themselves when I'm snitching as I cook, but damn they're good.
3. The Pistachio - They are crack in nut form.
4. The Pecan - Pecan pie is my favorite, but that is likely due in large part to the huge amounts of sugar and corn syrup. A pecan is still a good nut.
5. The Peanut - If they're in their shell and freshly roasted they're best, but I like 'em most ways. I especially like the redskin ones. I do have to admit that dry roasted is not my favorite preparation for a nut.
6. The Cashew - People seem to think of them as a superior nut, but I think that they're good but not great.
The Bottom Five:
1. The Brazil nut: The texture is off and they don't really taste that great.
2. The Almond: If they're slivered and added to something, then I don't mind 'em at all, but for eating out of hand, the almond is SUCK. They're too hard. And almonds still in the shell are only good for throwing at the people who serve them. When I get a nut mixture, I always feel like I have to eat the almonds first to get them out of the way.
3. The Macadamia Nut: If it's not in a sugar cookie hanging out with some white chocolate, then I'm not really interested.
4. The Hazelnut: It does nothing for me in any way at all. It'd be higher on the hate list except that it generally keeps it's hazelnutty nose out of my bidness.
5. The Chestnut: I have only had chestnuts once that I can recall, and they were horrible. I was told that they're normally better, so they're low on my hatred list until I try them again.
