markjwilder: (Stanley Cup 2008)
Is there anyone else here who is a superstitious dork when it comes to sports? Because I am one. Let me preface by saying that I'm not NORMALLY a superstitious dork. I don't worry about black cats or wish on stars or worry about spilled salt. Okay, I admit that I still pick up pennies, though.

Aaaaaaaanyway, last Monday I traveled to Uxbridge MA for business, but I scheduled it early enough to make sure that I was in my hotel room by 8pm so I could watch the Red Wings play in game five of the Stanley Cup Finals. I grabbed two Mt. Dews from the lobby and a couple of Snickers bars as hockey-watching snacks. The Wings played well, but the Pens tied it with 34 damn seconds left. I watched all three overtime periods, smoking at the intermissions and grabbing an orange before the last OT. The Pens scored on the powerplay and my beloved Wings got beat.

So, when Wednesday's game six rolled around, I once again retreated to the solace of my hotel room. But when I stopped in the lobby this time, I put back the Mt. Dew because clearly Mt. Dew was cursed. Two Diet Pepsis instead. And a Hershey Bar and a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup (which I didn't eat because the words were in yellow, which is one of the Penguins colors). The Penguins mounted a comeback at the end, but luckily (or should I say THANKS TO MY CHOICE OF SODA) the Wings held 'em off and won the cup. I can promise you, though, that if it had gone to OT then there would have been NO ORANGES.

So my point is that I'm a dork. Now, I'm not an idiot (at least not on this), and I know that my choice of beverage had no bearing whatsoever on the outcome of the game, but it's indicative of the kind of thing I do when faced with "big game" situations like this. I imagine it's common, as it gives you some sense of control over something that is in reality waaaaaaaay out of your hands.

And I'm a dork, but at least I'm cute.

In other news: It was an early morning yesterday. I was up before the dawn. And I really have enjoyed my stay, but I must be moving on.
