An entry that ALMOST has substance!
May. 9th, 2008 02:16 pmDoes anyone else discover songs they like when they are used in commercials, or is that just me? Here are four songs that I probably wouldn't know if it weren't for commercials:
1. I Monster - Daydream in Blue. This song was used in a Target commercial, and I've seen it in another commercial more recently. The opening 30 seconds or so is perfect for commercials. I can't find the commercial on YouTube, but I did find the music video for the song so that you can hear it.
2. Spencer Davis Group - I'm a Man. A re-do of this song was used in a Volkswagen commercial in the UK. I saw it when I was traveling through there. I would normally despise a song that uses a singing dog with CGI lips, but in this case, the song won me over. There's also an odd proto-video of the original on YouTube.
3. Marlena Shaw - California Soul. A recent Dockers commercial that you can still see on the air now uses this song. It must be a good song if it's another in a long line of bullshit "California is better than everywhere else" things* and yet I still like it. String arrangements in a soul song make me so so so happy**. YouTube has both the commercial and a full version of the song.
4. The Mosquitoes - Boombox. From a commercial long ago that I can't even remember what it was. It's a good song, though. YouTube has the video for the song.
*Californians are still better then Texans as far as superiority complexes go, though, and of course I'm generalizing both to a vocal (yet annoying) minority of residents of those states.
** See also: Labi Siffre's I Got the..., which hasn't been used in a commercial, but was sampled (starting at 2:09 of the video) in a popular hip-hop song.
