I'm sort of in the market for a new computer, though I've decided that I want to build it myself to get the most bang for my buck (and because that would be fun). The problem is, of course, that I have no idea what components to buy. So I leave it to you, my lj friends, to help me out. I know that Chris will know, and I bet Eric has some good suggestions, too. I don't know who else is a big computer-head.
JOEY-MARK'S NOT-DREAM-BUT-REASONABLY-POWERFUL-COMPUTER SPECS
- Processor: I will mostly be using it to surf the internet, but I'd like to know that if I brought home a game that it'd be able to play it. Pirates and Age of Empires will definitely be played on it, but neither of those are terribly modern. But I'd like to at least know that I'd get decent performance if I brought home the latest graphic-intensive program. If the motherboard could handle a more powerful chip in the future, then I'd go yay.
- Graphics: See above.
- Storage: I like a lot of hard drive space. I have 200GB right now and it's sort of tight, but I figure lets go whole-hog and plan on at least 700GB storage. That should last me a while.
- Memory: 1GB is good. 2GB is better.
- Other media: Figure on one DVD-RW and one DVD-ROM. The DVD-RW could be CD-RW if the budget didn't allow. A multi-way flash reader that reads SD, CF, and MemoryStick Duo would be a big yay.
- Case: I figure I'll have two HDDs off the bat, and I'd like it if there was a space for another if I wanted it. Power Supply big enough to power everything with 25% capacity to spare.
- Networking: Wireless and Ethernet 10/100 will suffice. Lot's of USB2.
- Other: You tell me! I assume I'll have to worry about processor heat sinks, other cooling, etc., but I don't know.
- The Budget: I'd like to have it for $2000, but that two-large also needs to include Vista Home Premium, a 17-19" monitor, and shipping on getting me all that crap.
