Mar. 19th, 2006 11:24 pmI sat next to this man on the plane to Raleigh today. He's the head of the Electrical Engineering department at Duke University. When he asked me what I do, I didn't know he was an impressive EE, so I gave my standard "layman" answer. the we talked about lots of electronics stuff, like spintronics (he doesn't believe that it'll ever be practical) and GaAsP semiconductors (he says that "it's the wave of the future and always will be") and Moore's Law (he said he met Mr. Moore, who admitted that it wasn't really a scientific study, but more of a lucky guess). He, like myself, is a large man, so it's a good thing we got along since we were shoulder-to-shoulder for the two hour flight.
He also laughed when I said I hated Duke's basketball team. "The New York Yankees of college basketball", he said, which is of course true. To be fair, I'll point out that my beloved Red Wings are the New York Yankees of hockey, so it's not something to be upset by. It means your team is too good.
On my flight from Sacremento to Seattle, I sat next to an assistant coach for LSU's women's basketball team. I didn't really talk to her, though.
I'm here in the Greensboro, NC, area for two weeks. Feel free to entertain me in some way.
