Aug. 4th, 2005 01:35 pmDid anyone catch Mythbusters last night (or maybe it was Monday or Tuesday, I DVR'd it. It was the "Killer Tissue Box" episode)? ( Cut for spoilers! )
Today's cheese is a tasty Pere Joseph Trappist cheese from Belgium. It was a tiny bit of sharpness with a fairly creamy texture and a nutty herbaciousness. It's pretty good. The other cheese is an old friend that I met for the first time last week: A French-made Chaumes cheese. It's like a perfect mix of brie and mozzarella, of that makes sense. It's quite soft, but not as soft as brie, with a mild flavor and a delightful creaminess on the tongue. The rind is orange and, well, I don't like eating the rinds of cheeses much. But it's tasty. I think I might make a grilled cheese with it.

Aug. 4th, 2005 02:44 pmRemember Owen, the beautiful baaaaaaaaaby hippo stranded by the tsunamis late last year and who eventually adopted a 103-year-old tortoise as his "mommy"? Man, those were some cute pictures. I was wondering today if there was an update on the situation, and indeed I found one. First I found an NPR story from mid-July, which in turn linked to the blog of Owen's caretaker (from which you can download an e-book and screensaver).
Oh, and I found some AMAZINGLY cute pictures, too...

Sorry, but we need this picture of Owen the hippo and Mzee the tortoise to be seen, too:
( Owen & Mzee playing peek-a-boo? )
The e-book (which will be a real book in another six months or so) was written by a six-year-old girl who finishes it with this paragraph: "And whether Owen thinks Mzee is his mother or his father or just a good friend it really doesn't matter. Because Owen is no longer alone. And neither is Mzee." And then a 33-year-old man from Chicago cries a little.
