Jul. 11th, 2005 04:26 pmAs many of you will recall, I have an obsessive personality. You may remember this from tequila, fountain pens, the Amazing Compact Game Kit™ (which I need to do an update on), consumer electronics, Eels, Ghettobillies, Ween, movies, porn, guitar shit (and I still can't play the fucker), George Saunder's short story Jon, et al.
The current obession is board games. This comes from the tail end of the original Game Kit obsession, where I started collecting a few that I liked, even though they had no chance of fitting in the kit (and Christmas, where I got a bunch of the old MB board games), continual playing of games with Paul and Nancy (and occasionally others), and the oddest inspiration which has sparked a major resurgance in board gaming, Apple iTunes supports for podcasts. I now subscribe to three podcasts about board games (we're talking "Euro games"/Family Strategy Games, not Monopoly/Sorry and that ilk). As a direct result of this, I want about a billion games.
Games I've purchased in the last two weeks:
Carcassonne (Plus Inns and Cathedral Expansion)
Settlers of Catan
Bohnanza
Entdecker
San Marco
Hoity Toity
Modern Art
Puerto Rico
Shadows Over Camelot
Power Grid
Tigris and Euphrates
I have yet to play any of them. I need to get a group together and in the more immediate future, hijack Paul and Nancy's night.
While I'm at it, here are some other games that I'm interested in:
Memoir '44 - I'd have this right now, except that it's a two-player game (more can play in teams) and we usually have three. I'm sure I'll get it soon anyway.
San Juan - A card game that Nancy, Paul, and I have played a few times. A lot of fun.
Monsters Menace America - You're a monster stomping your way through American Cities. You also get to be the military to stop the other monsters.
Pirate's Cove - It's pirate themed, so if I get it, Katrina will like me more. Other girls on my flist will too, I'm sure.
Ticket to Ride: Europe - Apparently plays a little bit better than the original, even, and it's a fantastic game.
Gang of Four - Almost bought it today.
Just because I've read good stuff about 'em:
Acquire
El Grande
Goa
Lost Cities - Supposedly a great 2-player game.
Bang!

Jul. 11th, 2005 09:55 pmPaul and Nancy (and anyone else who likes Empire Builder type rail games):
I found an computerized version of "EuroRails" online. I put "EuroRails" in quotes because it's actually a randomly produced map, with a few other changes to go along with it (four engine types, movement penalty for each load/unload, etc. Read the document in the ZIP file). It's kinda fun.
