Jun. 6th, 2005 02:22 pmOne thing that people may not know about me is that I love foreign money. Not the spendability of it, just the different designs and shapes and styles. Recently I bought 1.5 pounds of random (circulated) foreign coins on eBay, as well as a wide variety of global banknotes. I just like looking at 'em. The banknotes are interesting and some are very pretty (like the Suriname 5 Gulden note). The coins are also very cool. And I'm learning a lot of things, too. Like that Helvetica is the name for Switzerland. And that "Island" is Icelandic for "Iceland". And that many countries have tiny tiny coins or make them out of extremely lightweight materials. There's one coin from Laos that is the size of a US half-dollar and weighs roughly the same as a dime.
I just find 'em interesting is all.
Incidentally, these are my favorite banknotes, the now-defunct 50 and 250 Gulden notes of The Netherlands:
