Movie Reviews: American Splendor; thirteen
Sep. 2nd, 2003 11:23 amAmerican Splendor - I am Harvey Pekar. Well, I'm not, but in a lot of ways I am. If you don't know, this movie is about a "regular Joe" guy who writes some underground comic books illustrated by R. Crumb and other famous artists of the day. He becomes something of an underground sensation as do many of his friends that are in the books. The movie is very interesting, with shots going back-and-forth between reenacted scenes and real-life scenes with Harvey and his friends. I loved this movie, and I identified x100 with the main character. Joey gives American Spendor four stars out of four and can't recommend it enough.
thirteen - As much of a great father as I think I'll be someday (assuming I can ever find a woman that will allow me to impregnate her), this is the kind of movie that scares the holy loving shit out of me. It also scares me because it's exactly like my niece Emily right now, except that she's a few years older. Teenage girls have turned into little sexpots because they want nothing more than to be popular with the girls. The parents have to take some responsibility, but in the case of my sister, she's doing everything she can to stay involved, but Emily still wants a tattoo and wears thongs and would be out of control if not for her parents. She drinks openly, but my sister is understandably reluctant to punish her because it will only make Emily be dishonest. I'm still not 100% sure that Emily will make it through unscathed. Most girls like her will eventually outgrow it when they past a couple years of college, but some of them will get caught by chance and end up getting pregnant or date-raped or hurt in a drinking accident... It's enough to make me crazy. I want to grab Emily by the shoulders and shake the hell out of her. I just want to shake the hell out of her. Anyway, the movie (needless to say) gives moms with teenage daughters something to think about, and I'd encourage them to take their daughters to the movie and have some frank discussions with them after watching it. I'm just afraid that some of them won't see the message. Ack. Joey gives thirteen three-and-a-half stars out of four and worries.
