Last night was a good night. It started with a kick-ass dinner that i made that Tonya SHOULD have raved about in her journal, but neglected to. :) I know she enjoyed it, I don't really need the ego stroke. It was grilled salmon and grilled asparagus. The salmon was a touch underdone even for my preference, and I like it underdone. Tonya said it was "just a little tar-tar". Whatever it was, it was delicious. If you've never grilled asparagus, do so. It's easy, it's tasty.
I drove down into the city to celebrate
stacis's birthday with her by seeing a band that we'd seen (briefly) before. They're The Ghettobillies, and if you haven't heard me mention them yet then you're not really reading my journal very closely. You guys know how I am. I obsess. Sonic Voodoo's done for the summer, and now it's Ghettobillies time. We picked up Staci and my our way to The Wise Fools Pub for the show.
The opening band was The Danglers. They're a very odd mix of Violin, stand-up bass, keyboards, and drums. They're all fine musicians (I truly believe that), but their music was not at all my style. I didn't like 'em much at all. They were very into making sounds and rythyms that are different: most of their stuff was in non-4/4 time, including a back-to-back-to-back playing of a 6/8, then a 5/4, then a 3/4 song. The violin player sang, too, and liked to sing through his violin (he held it up to his face and sang across the strings) to get some reverberation off of it. The bass player clearly thought he was playing at Wembly, and he clearly wanted to make love to his instrument. The keyboard player may not have had a pulse. The drummer had really quiet and really loud for his volume choices, but I didn't hear much in between. They're not my kind of band at all. Think of Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin's clusterfuck cacophonies and you'll start to get a feel for it. They have a crowd who would enjoy them, but it doesn't include me.
The Ghettobillies took the stage and opened with a weird little parody of The Facts of Life theme song, and then started rocking us into the motherfucking ground. They jump, they jam, they kick, they head-bang. Tish's friend Charlene and her roommate Shawna showed up and had already had a few drinks (as had Tish). They were laughing and screaming and dancing and having a great time. The band continued to rock. They played one song where the bass player put down his bass and played a didgeridoo. It wasn't my favorite but it was interesting. The set was winding up, and they announced that they would do their last two songs. I was excited because we had only seem them do two songs before, and these were going to be the same two. They're kick-ass songs. But AssBob the Sound Guy said they only had five minutes, so they only played their fun closing song, not the butt-shaking dance number (Jiggle Low) that's my favorite.
But then we were saved by the bartender (who I also think is the owner, and who was quite inebriated) who insisted on one more song, something with a kick-ass guitar solo. They asked if a drum solo would suffice, and he agreed. So they played Jiggle Low. It's a great dancing song. The five of us were in the back of the bar dancing, and some girl who was in the band grabbed us and brought us to the dance area right in front of the stage where we boogied our asses off until the set was done. We laughed, we jumped up and down, we jiggled, we wiggled, and Staci got birthday wished (during the song, no less) from the pink-spikey-haired bass player. He (Jason, the bass-player-guy) went from creepy to hot in Staci's eyes over the course of the night. He's handsome, for sure, with great stage moves.
When the set was done, we chatted with the band for a while, I bought some CD's (listening to them now) and finally went home. I got home at 3am. I'm a-tired.
We'll be seeing them again (with another favorite band, The E-Mics) at The Lyon's Den on June 20th. They'll be playing for record execs, so they'll appreciate a rowdy crowd, which is us.
