Congratulations to The Detroit Red Wings, who clinched the President's Trophy (for best regular season record) tonight with a 2-0 shutout win over Edmonton. Now then, boys, let's have a good playoff run (likely against the same Edmonton team).

Edited to add: I don't know who maintains the Red Wing's Wikipedia page, but they already have the President's Trophy up there, as well as an updated roster to include Don MacLean who played his first game with the team today (and scored the winning goal). Man, that's dedication.

I'm always conflicted when the Wings win the President's Trophy. It's been such a kiss of death of late. Either way, here comes the best time of year: Stanley Cup playoffs!!

Yeah, and the players know that and therefore make no big deal out of it. But in the last ten years they've both won and lost the Cup in President's Cup years, so it really doesn't mean much.

I just want them to play good hockey, and they've done that lately (haven't lost a game in regulation in over a month).

Hockey playoffs are easily the best playoffs in sports (IMHO, of course). I love extra-OT games. My best Red Wings memory is Stevie's 0-0 double-OT goal against St. Louis in... '96? The year before they won the first recent cup. Okay, now that I think about it, my best Red Wings memory was Yzerman lifting the Cup over his head in '97.

Oh, I remember 96....Yzerman from the blue line!!!

97 was, without a doubt, such a great moment. McCarty's Cup-clinching goal. I was jumping up and down and screaming when he made that goal. Of course, I live in a town that forgot about hockey, so I'm the only MF around here who cares anymore.

I watched that game at a bowling alley in Ovid, Michigan. It was awesome. I was hugging strangers.

Another odd story: At that time I participated in Red Wings' usenet groups, and I composed something I called "lord Stanley's Prayer" (read it here, word-for-word as I wrote it). As I was driving to said bowling alley, I was listing to WJR and some guy phoned in with "a prayer the concession vendor on level one at The Joe" had given him. It was, of course, my writing.

When I wrote it, I said to keep my name on it, but it was quickly lost, as was my moment of fame.

I was listing to WJR...

Was that port or starboard?

*winks*

Ha ha ha I don't get it.

But I still love you, so that's good. Now 'SPLAIN!

You're so cute.

See you tonight!

The Wings of the late 90s were something else. That's for sure.
